The 1980s. A time when pop culture forever changed with the debut of MTV, a time of shoulder pads and big hair. When the impossible seemed possible and when everything was bright and bold. It was without a doubt, a dramatic decade marked by excess, self-expression, and rapid change. I should know, I was born the same year MTV came on the air, 1981, and growing up, I fully embraced the cartoons, the music, the movies and of course, the cars. It was a wild time with manufacturers pumping out exciting loud cars only to be taken apart by an army of aftermarket tuners to create wilder versions of these already excessive automobiles. Koenig Specials, Gemballa, DP Motorsport, Zender, AMG, Lorinser and a host of other shops were all ready to take your banker’s bonus in exchange for their custom-built machines. In the 80s, if you had the means, why not shout about it! Good taste be damned!
But what if, you wanted something extra special, something that the aftermarket crowd could never provide? A custom build, straight from the factory. That’s where the story of this car comes along. The Porsche 930, 911 Turbo Flatnose. It’s not even a limited edition, it’s limited full stop. Built only on special order via Porsche’s invitation-only Sonderwunsch (Special Wishes) program, the Flatnose has become one of the rarest classic 911s ever made. The story of this particular Flatnose variant is even more special though.
With the majority of Flatnose articles focused on the later cars offered by the factory from 1986 onwards with pop-up headlights, it is easy for some to dismiss this earlier car as something built by the numerous aftermarket shops at the time. The truth is, these are one of the earliest Flatnose commissions ever to come out of the Porsche Werk 1 factory.
Initially conceived as a one-off for TAG Heuer co-owner Mansour Ojjeh. The first Flatnose commissioned was developed as a road-legal version of the 935 race car. It was built on the body shell of a standard Porsche 930 and had custom fabricated 935 body panels fitted to it. This specially built one-off also had suspension and brakes shared with the 935 race car, BBS wheels, special brilliant red paint and had a 3.3-litre turbocharged flat-6 engine from the Porsche 934 race car. It was a very special car indeed and turned out to be a very popular car amongst well-heeled enthusiasts who followed suit and started commissioning their very own Flachbaus before Porsche started offering it as a factory option in 1986 complete with pop-up headlights. This is one of those early cars with the bumper recessed lights and one of two which amazingly made it to sunny Singapore. Both of which have survived the test of time and are still running on our local roads.
Built and registered in 1982, this 930 is an original Z-Order car, with Z representing Zusatzauftrag used for the special wishes program cars. It was a special order bound for Singapore and was originally in Zinn Metallic Silver, before receiving a few different paint coats through its life culminating in a very period-correct GP white. One can only imagine the amount of money it cost to procure such an automobile back in the day.
Inside, the entire cabin has been refinished in black with a new-old-stock Italvolanti Steering wheel fitted. Interestingly, the original spec sheet of the car had a champagne interior which would probably have felt even more 80s.
With actual production figures for these early cars not readily available on the internets, it is difficult to determine just how many there are out there. But with information already so scarce, it doesn’t take an expert to realise that these are not your (already rare) run of the mill RHD Porsche 930s.
